“The Night was Dark”
430 Years Prior to the Exodus, to the Very Day

T
he purpose of this Hebrew interlinear word study is to identify the lunar phase on the night of the Exodus.  Yahuah’s Covenant with Abraham was made on a night identified as “dark,” precisely 430 years prior to this, to the very day.  Might this “dark” night so long ago, be the missing link identifying the true New Moon

Genesis 15:12, 17
Verse 12
It came to pass when the sun went down a vision, came upon Abram and he beheld an exceedingly terrible darkness that fell upon him.
Verse 17
It came to pass when the sun went down it was dark . . .

Commentary:

Yahuah called Abram out of Ur of the Chaldeans and led him on a faith journey to the Promised Land. Yahuah then made a covenant with Abraham as a promise, declaring that Abraham would have an heir and many descendants who would be enslaved for 400 years, but then return to inherit the land we still call Israel today (Genesis 15:1-21).
Four hundred and thirty (430) years “to the very day” later, 1) Yah led Moses and Israel out of Egypt by night on the 15th at the conclusion of 430 years to the very day (Exodus 12:40-42 and Deuteronomy 16:1, 2).  2) A month later, on the 15th, the people ran out of food and Yahuah provided quail that night and manna the next morning (Exodus 16:1-2).  3) The next month, “to the very day” that they had left Egypt, Yah brought Israel to the foot of Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19:1-2).
For three months in a row, these highly significant and timely events were recorded for a reason, as they related to Israel and the Abrahamic Covenant. In each case, it was recorded that the events occurred on the “15th” or that it was “to the very day” from the month they had left Egypt.
Therefore, each event occurred in the middle of a lunar month on the night of the 15th. But not one of the Exodus accounts give us a bearing on the phase of the moon for those nights or whether the sky was “dark” when the sun went down.  However, Genesis 15 reveals the foundational truth of the appearance of the night sky when Yahuah made a covenant with Abram.  Remember, each of the Exodus events were connected back “to the very day” 430 years previously to that very night of the covenant. It is here alone that the description is given for the night sky.
Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, [terrible] great darkness fell upon him. Genesis 15:12-13
And it came to pass, when the sun went down it was dark . . . Genesis 15:17
The reason this is so significant is that all the Exodus night events were established and based upon the paramount night of the Abraham Covenant.  Everyone knows that when the sun goes down it is “night,” but this verse is describing in simple terms the nature of the sky that particular night when the sun set, defining it as “dark.” This is the only place in Scripture where this is done.
Remember, there is no contention as to what day of the month this was.  It was clearly the middle of the month and specifically the 15th.  The only question is with regard to which lunar phase was present in that night sky, and by default, there are only two viable options for the middle of the month.  Either this was the night of the “full moon” or it was the night of the “dark conjunction” moon.  In comparing the two, the night of conjunction is lit only with the twinkling stars, while the “full moon” is 1/7th the brightness of the sun, according to Enoch 1, by Nickelsburg and Vanderkam. The night of the full moon is never described as dark, rather all marvel at its brilliance.  By implication, the lunar phase of the 15th had to be the “dark conjunction.”
Might the heavenly Father in His Omniscience known that the true New Moon would become a point of controversy in the centuries following the crucifixion of His Son? So He placed the “sign” of authenticity of the true lunar phase for the 15th of the lunar month in the safety of the Abrahamic Covenant.  It is this foundational covenant that also traces the promised Messiah and His pre-ordained night of the crucifixion.  Thus we can know with certainty that Passover, the 14th of the lunar month, nearly 2000 years later, was also on a dark or nearly dark lunar phase. Consequently, the “full” New Moon is established on yet another principle of Scripture.
Key Support Verses:
  • Exodus 16:1-2   -  15th day of second month people complained of hunger.
And they departed from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai; and on the fifteenth day, in the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt, all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron. Exodus 16: 1, 2 Septuagint
On the 15th day of the second month of the year, after departing from Egypt, the people murmured and complained of hunger. Exodus 16:1-3
  • Exodus 12:40  - Now the sojourn of the children of Israel who lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years.
  • Exodus 12:41  -  And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, on the very same day, it came to pass that all the armies of Yahuah went out from the land of Egypt.
19:1 In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai.  2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount.
  • Deuteronomy 16:1  -  Observe the month of Abib, and keep the Passover to the LORD your God, for in the month of Abib the LORD your God brought you out of Egypt by night. Deut 16:1-2
  • Genesis 15:12 -When the sun was going down . . . a frightening darkness fell upon Abraham.
  • Genesis 15:18 - On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying . . .
Additional Scripture Support for the “Full” New Moon
Presented below are thirteen diverse reasons for a “full” New Moon. Each of the following studies need to be read in their order, as they build upon one another revealing weighty evidence. I have kept these word studies short for readability.  Simply click on each link to pull up the supporting Word Study material.
  • Luke 23:44-45 – A darkened sun occurred on the day of the Messiah’s crucifixion between the sixth and the ninth hour. This can only happen during the dark conjunction lunar phase, revealing the true New Moon is the “full moon.”
  • Amos 8:9-11 - This prophecy given by Amos 800 years prior to the crucifixion declares a darkened sun was to occur at noon on the day of the Messiah’s death.  Three gospels confirm this as fact.  A solar eclipse occurs only at the time of a dark lunar phase, as a result the evidence supports the “full moon” as the true New Moon.
  • Matthew 24:27 - Each heavenly luminary shines from east to west when it is both visible and ruling time.  The only lunar phase that does this is the “full moon,” making it the true new moon.
  • Job 26:9 - He apportions the face of the “full moon” for a statute of set time.
  • Revelation 22:2 – The tree of life yields twelve fruit, one each month according to the measure of the New Moon.
  • Revelation 21:21 - Twelve gates of the New Jerusalem are twelve whole, individual pearls, representing twelve “full” New Moons.
  • Psalms 118:18-24 - The open gate and the stone rejected are related terms to the work of the “full moon,” which itself is a symbol of the Messiah, “the light of the world.”
  • Revelation 12:1 – The great sign in the heavens of the woman clothed with the sun, has a “full moon” under her feet and twelve constellations are symbolized above her head.  She herself is the constellation Virgo, the virgin, pure woman holding barley in her left hand and a palm frond in her right.
  • Psalms 81:3 – Blow the New Moon shofar on the “full moon,” the processor of time for all the holy Feasts (chag).
  • Hosea 2:11 – Reveals that “chag” includes all the feasts, not simply the pilgrim feasts, as a result neither the term “chag” nor the “full moon” can be fastened to the middle of the lunar month.
  • James 1:17-18 - Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.  Discover which lunar phase is the only lunar phase that can represent the Father of lights with no shadow in it.
  • Proverbs 4:18-23 – This study illustrates the pure and perfect light of the “full moon” is metaphorically represented as the finish line for the righteous seeker of truth. As the light of this lunar phase has come full circle, might it also be the starting point as in the New Moon?
  • Psalms 89:35-37 –  This study reveals that the full moon is “first” among the lunar phases and is set apart for sacred use in the appointed times of the Sanctuary.  As a result of this “new light” the call can be heard: “Babylon is fallen, is fallen . . . come out of her my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.”
  • Genesis 15:12,17  -  Yahuah’s Covenant with Abraham was made on a night identified as “dark.”  This “dark” night is the foundation for identifying the correct time of the month for Israel’s miraculous Exodus from Egypt 430 years later to the very day and by implication, the true New Moon.

May Yahuwah continue to bless you as you diligently seek Him.
