Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing (With A Special Note From Sister Wendie L. Edwards)

Scenes of Christ's Life set to the hymn "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" performed by the BYU Choirs under the direction of Mack Wilberg. Song arranged by Mack Wilberg.

What does the Word, "Prepare" Mean?

What does the Word, "Prepare" Mean?

3 Nephi 13:33 : “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”

My dear friends,

Life is short. We live, we learn, we make mistakes, we repent, we think, we grow in spirit and stature--but all along the way, we wonder, what is it that we should be doing? What should we focus on? For everyone, the answer may be different. However, first and foremost our devotion to our Father and his kingdom will keep us safe, both in this life and the life to come.

Here are some words of an apostle we should consider as we ponder in our preparations:

Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:

“ Find a retreat of peace and quiet where periodically you can ponder and let the Lord establish the direction of your life. Each of us needs to periodically check our bearings and confirm that we are on course. Sometime soon you may benefit from taking this personal inventory:
“What are my highest priorities to be accomplished while on earth?
“How do I use my discretionary time? Is some of it consistently applied to my highest priorities?
“Is there anything I know I should not be doing? If so, I will repent and stop it now.
“In a quiet moment write down your responses. Analyze them. Make any necessary adjustments.
“Put first things first” (“First Things First,” Ensign, May 2001, 9).

We would be wise virgins to fill our lamps with this advice.

To he who has ears, let him hear...

Health, More
Oil for our Lamps

I am invited to speak about health and preparation more than any other topic. Why? Because health, just like a testimony, or any other personal reserve cannot be shared. I continue to ask my audiences, if you heed the prophets and go about obtaining "every needful thing" but neglect your health, how will you help those you love in their time of need if the one who needs help is you? Knowledge and "things" will not save you in the day that physical reserve is needed.

Those who will lead their homes, wards and communities in Zion in the future are selecting themselves now as they prayerfully consider D&C 89 and it's promises of "health in the navel and marrow in the bones".  Deep down, we all know those words were written to us, to preserve us in the days of uncertainty ahead.

A Warning

"Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence ofaevils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts ofbconspiring men in the last days, I have cwarned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation—" (D&C 89:1)

What "evil and designs" is the Lord referring to? Could it be the highly refined, savory processed foods, void of nutrition, loaded with simple sugars, killing us softly with system wide inflammation, meant to give us insulin spikes and deficits to drive us to our next high carb meal? Or could it be the many caffeinated beverages meant to wring money from us because of our foolish addictions? How about the overwhelming amount of prescription drugs given to us to lull us into a sense of insensitivity, so the spirit's voice is far from our minds? Maybe it's not food, but the lack of activity that holds us hostage. Maybe we are so comfortable not moving, that we can't move any more. Could it be the games that our children and young people play that distract them from the important goals and potential of life? Pick one, any one and I'll tell you--you're right! We're in a world where we love our captors. We love our advanced society with it's empty delicacies and it's myriad of distractions.  We love it so much that we are unwilling to see it's monstrous face that peers at us under every plastic wrapper.

"...the aword of wisdom, showing forth the order and bwill of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last daysGiven for a principle with apromise, adapted to the capacity of the bweak and the weakest of all csaints, who are or can be called saints." (D&C 89:2-3)

Break the Bonds

How do we break the bonds that hold us? How do we shake off the dream-like state of confusion that fogs our minds from the artificial world that surrounds us? So many of us are prisoners of our own bodies and have no idea how to break free.

More and more, because of my medical role and knowledge, I find myself in the role of the trainer, the coach, the nurse in the night leading with the lamp to so many who were strangers but now are friends. It's true, I  know the way out. I know how to break free. I know how to clear the minds and hearts of the suffering from disease through the laws of health. Often, all one has to do is ask, then all is made clear.

It's clearly stated in the scriptures that:

"There is a alaw, irrevocably decreed in bheaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all cblessings are predicated—And when we obtain any ablessing from God, it is bybobedience to that law upon which it is predicated" (D&C 130:20-21).

If we want freedom of body, health of the cells, sinews, organs, we must live the laws that govern those blessings. We must live the laws of health. It's that simple. Our bodies were meant to heal its self. The Lord designed us that way.

What are God's laws of Health?

If I could encapsulate what the scriptures and science has found, including and in addition to D&C 89, which aids people to heal and become healthy, it's the following:

1. Faith and hope that it is possible.

"If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, nothing shall be impossible unto you" (Matt. 17:20).

2. A healthy body weight through portion and insulin control.
"food...for taste and for smell, to strengthen the body and to enliven the soul. ...to be used, with judgment, not to excess (D&C 59:19-20).

3. Proper nutrition, complete with all the trace minerals needed at the cellular level.
"And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man— Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving" (D&C 89:10-11).

4. The elimination of free radicals in the cells to promote cellular healing.

  • He that hath faith in me to be healed shall be healed: D&C 42:48;
5. An active lifestyle.

"And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings ...shall arun and not be bweary, and shall walk and not faint" (D&C 89:18,20).
6. Drinking pure water

"And he shewed me a pure river of awater of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb" (Revelation 22:1).

7. Daily and purposeful times of joy, alternating with spiritual contemplation and prayer

"Even them will I bring to my holy amountain, and make them joyful in my bhouse of cprayer" (Isaiah 56:7)

8. Forgiveness

"Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: bcondemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be cforgiven" (Luke 6:37).

Until next time…

"And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that theadestroying angel shall bpass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen." (D&C 89:21).

Sincerely,
