Master, the Tempest Is Raging

Just a few statements from the leaders of the church reminding us of the extreme wickedness that is indeed permeating the world today. They definitely seem to reinforce the above timely message.

President Gordon B. Hinckley sounded this warning in the October Conference of 2001:

We see today all of these evils, more commonly and generally, than they have ever been seen before, as we have so recently been reminded by what has occurred in New York City, Washington, and Pennsylvania, of which I shall speak tomorrow morning. We live in a season when fierce men do terrible and despicable things. We live in a season of war. We live in a season of arrogance. We live in a season of wickedness, pornography, immorality. All of the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah haunt our society. Our young people have never faced a greater challenge. We have never seen more clearly the lecherous face of evil.[1]
Commenting on this very topic in April conference of 2005 Elder Robert B. Oaks had this to say:

Standing firm on the Lord’s side is especially valuable today. Our prophet regularly points out that these are the last days. We know from the signs of the times that the end is drawing near. And Satan knows it as well. He and his forces never seem to sleep.

In a worldwide priesthood leadership training meeting, President Hinckley, noting the immoral conditions in the world, stated, “I do not know that things were worse in the times of Sodom and Gomorrah.”

He went on to say, “They and their wicked inhabitants were annihilated. We see similar conditions today. They prevail all across the world. I think our Father must weep as He looks down upon His wayward sons and daughters” (“Standing Strong and Immovable,” Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting, Jan. 10, 2004, 20).

I do not know how much more our prophet has to say for us to consider ourselves warned.

In a recent conference talk, Elder Dallin H. Oaks stated: “These signs of the Second Coming are all around us and seem to be increasing in frequency and intensity. … While we are powerless to alter the fact of the Second Coming and unable to know its exact time, we can accelerate our own preparation and try to influence the preparation of those around us. We need to make both temporal and spiritual preparation for the events prophesied at the time of the Second Coming” (“Preparation for the Second Coming,” Liahona and Ensign, May 2004, 7–9).

And these statements of warning came well before a season of unprecedented hurricane destruction in the Caribbean area and the tsunami devastation in East Asia.

Our hymn “Who’s on the Lord’s Side?” instructs us, “Now is the time to show.” Now is the time to stand fast in our faith and on our principles, as did Captain Moroni. We are needed now, deacons, teachers, priests, bishops, elders, high priests, and patriarchs. Now is the time to show our appreciation for the atoning sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now is the time to show our faith through our obedience to such basic commandments as the laws of chastity and tithing, the Word of Wisdom, and keeping the Sabbath day holy.

Now is the time to warn our neighbors by sharing the gospel message with them. Now is the time to provide the world with an example of decency and modesty, an example of virtue and cleanliness. We should never squander our priesthood power, wallowing in the corruptive, corrosive filth and slime of pornography.

Now is the time to review the covenants we have made with the Lord at the waters of baptism, covenants we made when we accepted the oath and covenant of the priesthood, and covenants we have made in His holy temples.

Now is indeed the time to show we are on the Lord’s side.[2]
And, In February of 2004 President Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles reiterated the following warning concerning the immorality, corruption, and degeneracy of our present day society:

I know of nothing in the history of the Church or in the history of the world to compare with our present circumstances,” said President Packer, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve. “Nothing happened in Sodom and Gomorrah which exceeds in wickedness and depravity that which surrounds us now.” . . . “Words of profanity, vulgarity, and blasphemy are heard everywhere,” he said. “Unspeakable wickedness and perversion were once hid in dark places; now they are in the open, even accorded legal protection.

At Sodom and Gomorrah these things were localized. Now they are spread across the world, and they are among us.”

... These are days of great spiritual danger for our youth.”
“Surely you can see what the adversary is about. The first line of defense, the home, is crumbling.4

And again more recently in the October 2013 Session of Conference Elder Packer gave this warning:

The Apostle Paul prophesied and warned that “in the last days perilous times shall come.

For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away (2 Timothy 3:1–5).
Paul also prophesied, “Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. “ (2 Timothy 3:13).

These verses serve as a warning, showing which patterns to avoid. We must be ever watchful and diligent. We can review each of these prophecies and put a checkmark by them as being present and of concern in the world today:

Perilous times — present. We live in very precarious times.

Covetous, boasters, proud — all are present and among us.

Blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection — all of these are well accounted for.

Trucebreakers, false accusers, and so on — all can be checked off against the prevailing evidence that exists all around us.

Moroni also spoke of the wickedness of our day when he warned:

When ye shall see these things come among you … ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation. …

Wherefore, I, Moroni, am commanded to write these things that evil may be done away, and that the time may come that Satan may have no power upon the hearts of the children of men, but that they may be persuaded to do good continually, that they may come unto the fountain of all righteousness and be saved. “ (Ether 8:24, 26).[3]
